Ej: "I was sleeping when he called"
- Past Perfect: lo que había pasado ANTES. Ej: "She had already left when I arrived"
- Combínalos en narrativas: "While I was working, he had already finished" (Mientras yo trabajaba, él ya había terminado)
- No confundas: Past Simple = acción puntual. Past Continuous = acción en progreso.
Past Continuous (Pasado Continuo)
Estructura: was/were + verbo+ING
| Pronombre | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| I / he / she / it | was + ing | I was sleeping. (Estaba durmiendo) |
| you / we / they | were + ing | They were playing. (Estaban jugando) |
Usos principales:
- Acciones interrumpidas: I was working when the phone rang. (Estaba trabajando cuando sonó el teléfono)
- Acciones simultáneas en el pasado: While she was cooking, he was watching TV. (Mientras ella cocinaba, él veía la tele)
- Escenas descriptivas: It was raining and the wind was blowing. (Llovía y hacía viento)
Forma AFIRMATIVA:
- I was reading a book. (Estaba leyendo un libro)
- She was playing tennis. (Ella estaba jugando al tenis)
- They were studying. (Estaban estudiando)
Forma NEGATIVA:
| Pronombre | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| I / he / she / it | was not / wasn't + ing | I wasn't sleeping. (No estaba durmiendo) |
| you / we / they | were not / weren't + ing | They weren't playing. (No estaban jugando) |
Forma INTERROGATIVA:
| Pregunta | Respuesta afirmativa | Respuesta negativa |
|---|---|---|
| Were you sleeping? | Yes, I was. | No, I wasn't. |
| Was he working? | Yes, he was. | No, he wasn't. |
| Were they studying? | Yes, they were. | No, they weren't. |
vs Past Continuous
Esta comparación sale mucho en exámenes:
| PAST SIMPLE | PAST CONTINUOUS |
|---|---|
| I worked yesterday. (lo hice y terminé) | I was working when you called. (estaba en el proceso) |
| He arrived at 5pm. | He was sleeping when I arrived. |
| She finished her homework. | She was finishing her homework when I saw her. |
Past Perfect (Pasado Perfecto / Pluscuamperfecto)
Estructura: had + Past Participle
| Pronombre | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| I / you / he / she / it / we / they | had + past participle | I had finished. (Había terminado) |
💡 Equivalente en español: El pluscuamperfecto. "Había comido" = "I had eaten".
Forma AFIRMATIVA:
- She had already left when I arrived. (Ella ya se había ido cuando llegué)
- They had finished the project before the deadline.
- He had never seen such a thing. (Nunca había visto tal cosa)
Palabras clave:
- already (ya): He had already gone. (Ya se había ido)
- just (justo acababa de): She had just arrived. (Justo acababa de llegar)
- never (nunca): I had never been there. (Nunca había estado allí)
- before (antes): We had met before. (Nos habíamos conocido antes)
Forma NEGATIVA:
| Ejemplo |
|---|
| I hadn't finished. (No había terminado) |
| She hadn't seen it. (Ella no lo había visto) |
| They hadn't arrived. (No habían llegado) |
Forma INTERROGATIVA:
| Pregunta | Respuesta afirmativa | Respuesta negativa |
|---|---|---|
| Had you finished? | Yes, I had. | No, I hadn't. |
| Had she seen it? | Yes, she had. | No, she hadn't. |
Timeline: Past Perfect → Past Simple
Timeline:
- Past Perfect (I had finished) ANTES que Past Simple (he arrived)
- Ejemplo: I had finished my work CUANDO he arrived. (Primero terminé, luego llegó)
Otro ejemplo:
- She had worked there for 10 years before she retired. (Había trabajado allí 10 años antes de jubilarse)
Combinación: Past Continuous + Past Simple
Acciones simultáneas / interrumpidas:
| Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| Past Continuous + Past Simple | While I was sleeping, the phone rang. (Mientras dormía, sonó el teléfono) |
| Past Perfect + Past Simple | After I had finished, I left. (Después de haber terminado, me fui) |
Errores típicos del examen
❌ Incorrecto → ✅ Correcto
- I was sleeping when he arrives. → I was sleeping when he arrived.
- She had went. → She had gone. (past participle, no past simple)
- They was playing. → They were playing.
- Had you finished? No, I didn't. → No, I hadn't.
- I had finished already. → I had already finished.
